DECEMBER 8: IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

11/12/2021 | Agenda - News

What is the Immaculate Conception?

The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed by Pius IX in 1854.

This feast is celebrated on december 8.

This dogma means that Mary was born preserved from original sin.

It is the culmination of a long process of theological reflection on the divinity of Christ.

In 431, the Council of Ephesus, affirming that Jesus was fully man and fully God...

First raised the question of the status of Mary, who was proclaimed Mother of God.

Subsequently, a thesis was accepted:

to shelter Jesus in her womb, Mary could only be pure of all sin (1453 - Council of Basel).

1858… the words of Our Lady of Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous: "I am the Immaculate Conception",

were received as a confirmation of the doctrine.

Among Christians, only Catholics recognise the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

Rather than making it unattainable, it invites us to be like Mary... in total availability to God's plan!
