Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is marked by the imposition of ashes: the priest places a small amount of ashes on the forehead of each of the faithful, as a sign of man's fragility, but also of hope in God's mercy.
The ashes are applied to the forehead to call us even more clearly to conversion, precisely through the path of humility.
Nowadays, penance is summed up in prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Today, fasting in religion does not only mean to deprive oneself of food, but to understand its meaning. For example, it means putting oneself in the shoes of a person on earth who lives with the bare minimum and therefore allows one to become aware of the present world.
Ash Wednesday is an opportunity to repent, to unite with the Lord and to celebrate his praise.
A life according to the Gospel is a life under the Father's gaze, implies the putting into practice of the demands of the Kingdom. Letting grace act in itself. Between the twofold demands of conversion and life according to the Gospel, Paul brings the missing milestone with the help of two formulas which are offered for our meditation:
